How to Ensure the Accuracy of Furnace Profilers

The measurement accuracy of furnace profilers is affected by multiple factors including the recorder unit, thermocouples, heat shield, test operation and environmental interference. Continuous reliable temperature readings can only be achieved through five key controls: periodic calibration, sensor management, standardized operation, routine maintenance and data verification.

I. Periodic Metrological Calibration (Core Measure)

  1. Set calibration intervals: A full calibration every 6–12 months is recommended for general use; shorten to 3–6 months for high-volume mass production. New instruments or idle units must be calibrated before commissioning.
  2. Multi-point calibration in a constant-temperature bath: Select multiple temperature points covering the normal production range. Place the profiler’s thermocouple together with a traceable reference thermometer inside the uniform temperature field, compare readings and correct deviations. Issue traceable calibration certificates to satisfy audits for ISO, automotive electronics and new energy industries.
  3. Calibration environment control: Keep ambient temperature at 20±5℃ and relative humidity at 45%–75%, free from strong electromagnetic interference and air turbulence.
  4. Archive calibration records: Retain full calibration reports, error data and dates for quality traceability.

II. Thermocouple (Sensor) Selection, Inspection and Replacement

Most temperature measurement errors originate from thermocouples:

  1. Select the correct thermocouple type (Type K is widely used for SMT reflow soldering). Thermocouple wires must match the sensor type; mixed types are not allowed.
  2. Inspect thermocouples before every test: Check wires for oxidation, cracks and damage, and verify junction integrity. Aged or oxidized thermocouples cause measurement drift and shall be replaced promptly.
  3. Proper probe mounting: The thermocouple junction must be tightly attached to the measured surface of the workpiece to capture the true part temperature instead of furnace air temperature.

III. Heat Shield and Hardware Inspection

  1. Ensure the heat shield is intact without cracks or degraded insulation material. Damaged insulation overheats the recorder and distorts data acquisition.
  2. Confirm sufficient battery power before testing to avoid power failure during profiling runs.
  3. Check recorder communication and sampling functions; keep firmware and supporting software at stable versions.

IV. Standardized Test Operations to Minimize Human-induced Errors

  1. Set appropriate sampling frequency: Use higher sampling rates for fast-ramp processes to accurately capture peak temperature and heating slope.
  2. Avoid electromagnetic interference: Keep the system away from inverters and high-power heating supplies to prevent noisy temperature curves.
  3. Thermocouple routing: Do not sharply bend wires, which may introduce thermoelectric offset from mechanical stress.
  4. Repeat comparison tests: Run repeated profiles under identical conditions and check curve repeatability to detect abnormal drift.

V. Routine Maintenance and In-process Verification

  1. Clean residual flux and grease from thermocouples after use to prevent probe corrosion.
  2. Maintain equipment logbooks recording all tests, calibrations and sensor replacements.
  3. On-site cross-check: Before formal production runs, compare readings against a calibrated reference probe to quickly identify instrument drift.

VI. Summary

Guaranteeing furnace profiler accuracy hinges on regular traceable metrological calibration, thermocouple condition control, standardized test procedures, proper thermal protection and routine inspection. Full-process controls deliver consistently authentic temperature profiles and secure product process quality.
