Can the service life of thermocouple probes be extended through maintenance?

Yes. Proper maintenance can effectively extend the service life of thermocouple probes. However, it cannot exceed the theoretical service‑life limit of the material itself. It can only slow down oxidation, corrosion and mechanical damage and delay failure.

Key Maintenance Measures

1. Protection during installation and operationAvoid excessive bending or pulling of cables during installation. Do not place the probe close to heating elements or furnace walls to prevent local overheating. Minimize severe thermal shock; do not insert a cold probe directly into a high‑temperature furnace chamber.
2. Regular visual inspectionCheck the sheath for cracks, pitting, deformation and splashed metal deposits. Inspect terminals for oxidation or looseness, and tighten them promptly to reduce contact resistance. If the sheath is damaged, internal core wires will fail rapidly and shall be dealt with in time.
3. Cleaning treatmentRemove dust, oil contamination and molten metal residues from the probe surface only after it has cooled down. Prevent continuous corrosion of the sheath caused by contaminants at high temperature. Never touch or wipe the probe while it is hot.
4. Working‑condition controlAvoid long‑term operation near the upper temperature limit of the thermocouple. Try to suppress corrosive gases and volatiles inside the furnace to reduce chemical corrosion.
5. Storage managementStore spare probes in a dry environment to prevent moisture‑induced rust. Provide adequate protection during transportation to avoid collision damage.
